The idea consists of forming a battery with the two rookes stacked one behind another and the queen at the rear, this can lead to massive damage to the opponent as it usually marks the beginning of the final assault (in this case it was only four moves before the mate). Alekhine gun is quite difficult to assemble because the pieces it requires may also be involved in covering some disputed fields. It should be used only when a very clear and often decisive advantage is to be gained aiming against vital heavilly protected fields.
Missusing Alekhine’s gun can lead to an unsurmountable loss in tempo and that can make the difference in a match. Here is the match that spawned Alekhine’s gun: Alexander Alekhine vs. Aaron Nimzovich:

Six years later, in 1936, William Winter is defeted by Alekhine in Nottingham, again the victory is secured by the Alekhin gun. Since then chess players have learned a lot about using and guarding against this beautiful formation. However, some international games are still being lost and won by the force of the Alekhine gun.
