Agra is the city of architectural wonders! Agra, situated on the banks of Yamuna is home to one of the most famous and the most beautiful buildings in the world, the Taj Mahal. But Agra definitely has much more to it than just Taj Mahal. Home to many magnificent examples of architecture, beautifully laid gardens and many religious sites, Agra has a lot to explore and discover. Agra particularly gained importance during the Mughal era and reached its present architectural splendor.

A masterpiece of Indian Muslim architecture, the Taj Mahal in Agra was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Set amidst landscaped gardens, the Taj is built in white marble and is decorated by semi-precious stones. Another imposing building and a World Heritage Site is the Agra Fort. An imposing structure built in red sandstone; the fort is crescent shaped and has a number of splendid buildings inside it. Notable buildings within the fort in Agra include the the Diwan-e-Am and Diwan-e-Khas (halls of public and private audience), Pearl Mosque, Khaas Mahal, Jehangir's Palace, Sheesh Mahal (mirrored palace), and Musamman Burj.

Other buildings in Agra worth watching are Itimad-ud-Daula’s tomb, a mausoleum in white marble, the Jama Masjid, noted for its atypical dome and absence of minarets and Chini ka Rauza, a structure noted for it Persian style dome of blue glazed tiles. Some famous temples of Agra are Balkeshwar Temple, Kailash Temple and Mankameshwar Temple.

Lovely gardens dot the city of Agra too. Agra is home to the oldest Mughal Garden in India. Aram Bagh was laid by Babur on the banks of Yamuna. The Mehtab Bagh is an exquisite garden opposite Yamuna banks. Keetham Lake, situated in the Surdas Reserved Forest, is yet another tourist spot in Agra. With its serene surrounding it is an idyllic spot – perfect for unwinding.
