The continents stellar performance was lead by sub-Saharan Africa which registered a growth of 9.4% while North Africa ended the year above average posting an increase of 5.8%. The global tourism growth rate currently stands at 4.5% making it a new record year for the industry.
Asia and the pacific were able to maintain their extraordinary growth level at 7.6 percent both due to the recovery of Thailand and the Maldives from the impact of the December 2004 Tsunami. According to the report, Europe performed on target last year recording a 4 percent increase as Germany took advantage of the football World Cup 2006.
Spain’s solid results also contributed to the generally positive outcome. In the Middle East, international tourist arrivals are estimated to have risen by 4 percent last year, after the bumper years of 2004 and 2005. The rise was in spite of the overall geopolitical situation, the Israel-Lebanon crisis in particular. (Daily Nation Feb 27/07).
