This is why it is essential to implement some type of tracking system into your internet business plan. Tracking (whether you use software or an online service) allows you to find and take note of every click-through made by visitors to your website. If you are promoting more than one affiliate product or service, you can find out which of your campaigns is attracting the most click throughs, which ones need tweaking and the ones to get rid of. Knowing which campaigns are having a negative impact on your advertising budget can save you a lot of money.
It also comes down to time. There are only so many hours in a day and you cannot waste them by promoting an affiliate product that has no appeal. We live in a world where hype is 24/7. Scores of affiliate marketers get swept up in the hysteria and fall in love with a product they figure everyone will love as much as they do. Not. Failure to set up a tracking system means they squander time that could have been used to promote a program that visitors are truly interested in.
Numerous affiliate marketers have decided to purchase their own tracking software. While this is definitely a good investment, it is not totally necessary. As stated previously there are a ton of free services online you can use to track your affiliate campaigns. Many offer very comprehensive ad and link tracking with excellent statistical breakdowns. You can set up multiple tracking links for the same campaign and watch the results in real time.
No matter which one you use make sure your links are presentable. A tracking link has the tendency to look like an affiliate link. Just like web visitors are hesitant to click a link that looks like it will take them to a sales page, they will also be dubious about clicking a link that looks like you're tracking their movements. Use one of the many link cloakers available or simply go to a place like tinyurl.com. Also use a hyper link that is keyword optimized.
There is no limit to what you can do with good tracking system; from who on your opt in list is actually opening and reading your emails, to knowing which of your website banner ads is working. Affiliate internet marketing requires a lot of work to be successful but you can take much of the guesswork out of it by making ad tracking part of your online business system.
