Advertising Agencies are service businesses which aim to increase a client’s sales volume by marketing the client’s product and/or brand image. The marketing process includes creating advertisements, planning & strategizing, and promoting the product. |

Advertising agencies may be broadly classified as: -
Limited Service Advertising Agencies:-
As the name suggests, these advertising agencies offer only a few services. Some advertising agencies are primarily creative houses; some agencies only do promotional activities, while some other agencies might only offer production services.
Full Service Advertising Agencies:-
These are the big boys in the competition. A client can walk in with a product in hand, and come out with a complete marketing strategy- from product launch, to calculated sales volumes, to projected product growth in the next decade. These advertising agencies have all the necessary departments, can advertise in all known media and create new media as well.
Specialized Advertising Agencies:-
Agencies sometimes prefer to specialize and excel in one medium or in one clientele type. While some advertising agencies only do print and outdoor advertisements, some prefer TV and radio. Internet advertising agencies usually prefer to stick with digital form of advertising, because the internet itself involves a lot of sectors like search engines, social media like blogs and networking sites, web banners, etc.
Then there are some advertising agencies which specialize in advertisements only for medicos and hospitals, or engineering companies etc. This is because the content writers need know-how of the work their clients do.
In-house Advertising Agencies:-
Some companies prefer to have a creative team on their payroll for advertising purposes. Though usually in such cases, only the concept is conceived by the company, and the production work is outsourced to production houses.
Almost all advertising firms comprise of these three departments:
Creative Department:-
This department consists of people who conceive the idea behind the advertisement. The content writers and art directors work in tandem, and they report to a Creative Director.
Account Services:-
People in Account Services interact with the client, understand their requirements and inform the same to the creative team. In smaller companies, the creative team may also be required to handle client servicing.
Media Services & Production:-
Once the concept has been visualized and the client approves it, the media services personnel either interact with external agencies to get the idea on the media, or produce their own advertisements if the advertising agency is equipped enough to handle it.
On a final note, while more and more companies seek to advertise their products, advertising agencies themselves prefer to market themselves on a PR level with its clients.
