Historically, wood barrels have been the preferred container for aging and storing wines. However, the wood barrels can affect the flavor & color of the wine because the wood’s attributes can be absorbed by the wine. Inherent in the construction of wood barrels and the porous characteristic of wood, tiny spaces allow wine to get oxygenated and affect the wine’s taste. As a result, other types of containers are being used to store wine in the wineries.

Stainless steel wine barrels are a great alternative to the traditional wooden wine barrels, because stainless steel wine barrels are less expensive to maintain, do not erode easily and last longer. Stainless steel wine barrels can also help a winery save money over time. Wine is inherently acidic, which can easily corrode wood wine barrels. This drastically reduces the life of the wood wine barrels and causes a winery to purchase new barrels more frequently. Stainless steel wine barrels will not erode as quickly when compared to their wooden counterparts; therefore, a winery will not need to replace their stainless steel wine barrels as often. Unlike wood barrels, stainless steel barrels are easier to clean and will not hold onto or absorb flavors of its contents. Because stainless steel wine barrels do not share the porous characteristic of wood barrels, they are impervious to oxygen. This means when stainless steel wine barrels are used and properly maintained, the true flavors of the wines are not altered.

Precautions to Take

When using stainless steel wine barrels, it is important to keep the inner surface smooth and free of scratches. Remnants of previous wines can remain in the scratches and grooves, impacting the flavor of subsequent wines stored in the stainless steel wine barrels.

Rinsing the barrel with hard water can form lime deposits that can corrode the stainless steel wine barrel and reduce its life. It is important to wipe the wine barrels dry after rinsing with hard water.

Stainless steel wine barrels are hygienic, easy to clean, last longer and are a cost-saving alternative to wood wine barrels. It is no surprise their popularity is increasing amongst wineries. More and more wineries are switching to stainless steel wine barrels because they appreciate their stable chemical and physical properties.
