Each year, millions of Americans add decks or patios onto their homes. They do this, not only for entertainment reasons, but also to add value to their property. And why not? For most Americans, it's the largest investment ever made. Besides wanting this investment to be shown at its very best, it should entertain as well.

Therefore, sitting outside on a new deck or patio is extremely rewarding! And even better yet, having other people enjoying it (while entertaining them ) is wonderful! If you want one that holds its value and provides years of entertainment, make the most of your building experience!

Deck, patios and gardens are an extension of your interior living space....the most desired feature of your home. Decks and patios have become popular spaces for entertaining, barbecuing, relaxing, and children's play. They are actually, practical and valuable additions since they typically recoup most of the original construction cost ...plus all the years of entertaining!!!

Before you begin the project, you need to plan ahead carefully. Ask some relevant questions. Get some important answers before you speed ahead. Why are you adding this to your home? Is this for entertaining purposes? Is it for relaxation and only you? Or is it for both reasons....in which case, you have to consider which amenities you need, desire or just must have! Maybe for entertainment, you'll want a cooking center, or if it's for family use only, how about building a modest patio or deck? Perhaps a large enough one for you and your loved ones will suffice and be more economical.

While in the planning stage, ask yourself how many people will be using this space. Be realistic about your space needs. 20 square feet per person is a recommended space statistic and will be a comfortable space but not excessive. If your reason is entertaining, you will need more space for seating (whether built in or not), eating areas, cooking areas, hot tub(?), or even a spa.

Other important considerations are: When will it be used? Lighting will come into play here. Who will be using it? Safety and accessibility become an issue here. How will it be used? Privacy is a very important issue. Planning is an important part of this process. This deck or patio should be a very well-planned and designed space. Remember, it is not just what you want, but, it is an expenditure of your large investment, also. You have to study your real estate market to make certain that you are spending for things that buyers are paying for right now. (A reserve of 10-20% of your budget should cover any unexpected costs or changes.)

Remember at all times, this is an extension of your home. Echo the architectural style of your home when you are selecting your shape, style and materials for this space. Try to keep your selection of building materials to no more than two. This will give you more flexibility in the construction process and the final finishing stage.

Even a single material will give you an effective look if you remember to combine the appropriate landscaping and outdoor furniture.

A deck or patio provides a casual transition to the outdoors from your home. And it's a good way to enhance the value of your home!
