A former rugby player who had dreamt of making it to the professional league has won compensation after he was forced to give up the sport he loved due to failure of the hospital to properly diagnosed his wrist injury.

The 23-year-old man suffered the injury during a rugby match when he was just 16 years old. Doctors at the hospital in North Devon where he was treated advised him to rest his wrist for ten days which he did and continued to use his wrist thereafter. However, five months later his GP spotted a break in his wrist.

It appeared that the hospital failed to spot the fracture in a small bone in the wrist called schapoid. This type of injury is difficult to detect but nevertheless, the hospital should have offered him a follow up X-ray seven to ten days after the accident happened which might have helped reveal the injury.

The man instead had undergone three operations and a bone graft to help repair the fracture which cause him to lose the opportunity to pursue his career as a professional rugby player and he still suffers significant pain in his wrist.

The man filed compensation claims and two weeks before the case was due to come to court, the Northern Devon Healthcare Trust admitted that the hospital should have called him back for an X-ray and agreed to pay £80,000 in compensation.
