A Tooth Ache in The Maasai Mara

As a Tour operator one needs to be always on call just incase of any incidents that may occur while clients are on safari.

As a tour operator one must always be ready for any eventuality even a tooth ache needs to be taken seriously. as my experience was last week when one of our tour director called from the Masai Mara to inform me that one of our clients on safari needed to come before her schedule so that she may see a dentist for an emergency filling of her tooth. The client was scheduled to fly in from the Masai Mara together with five of her colleagues the following day for their Amboseli sector and subsequently for their Tanzanian Safari extension.

Needless to say that we did not want to take the chance of a client not enjoying her Tanzanian sector because of a tooth ache. Thank God I had the emergency numbers of Air Kenya as the call came slightly before 8.00 O’clock in the morning. Thank God also that Air Kenya had space in their morning flight the same day and they were very co-operative on the issue.

I picked the client from Wilson airport and took her straight to Nairobi Hospital where I had earlier on made an appointment with a dentist there. To the surprise of the dentist, the client insisted that I get in with her at the examination room despite my assurance that the dentist knows how to speak English very well. It is at this moment that I felt how clients must feel vulnerable when they are in a foreign country especially when it comes to sensitive issues of medical care and check ups.

This particular client had booked the safari together with her sister on the Lee special safari. I put her in my residence as we did not want to put in a hotel on her own. We established such a bond for that period that we were together and she felt so comfortable staying with us and so well taken care of that we truly felt touched. The parting short came when she gave me a pencil with her son’s name on it not to mention the beer bottle opener which unfortunately we did not have.

This is the kind of care that you expect to get when you travel with Woni Safaris and more so during that moment of need.
