An Ugly Beginning - A New Start
The 06 Tennessee Titans?
By Stephen Curley

It seems a new era for the Tennessee Titans began in 2006 during the NFL Draft when the Tennessee Titans, with the third overall pick, chose Vince Young, star quarterback from the University of Texas. In addition to Young, the Titans also acquired USC running back LenDale White with their second round pick.

The start of the 2006 season was anything but encouraging for the Titans organization or their fans. The release of veteran quarterback Steve McNair and later, the release of Steve’s backup, Billy Volic, combined with the surprise last minute singing of Quarterback Kerry Collins and the negative press surrounding rookie, Adam “PacMan” Jones, left Titans fans scratching their heads and questioning management decisions. From a fans viewpoint the Titans front office had a team, out of control.

Going into week 4 the Titans had lost all three of their previous games but a hint of change was in the air.

Week four, the Dallas Cowboys, traveled to Music City to face the Titans. With this matchup Tennsessee would start their rookie quarterback Vince Young after veteran Kerry Collins produced questionable results in the first 3 games of the season. The Cowboys embarrassed the Titans 45-14 and things seemed to be getting worst - yet week 5 against Payton Manning in the RCA Dome, the Titans played remarkably better, losing to a superior Colts team, by only one point, 14-13. Were the Titans coming together as a teams?

Week 6 against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field., the Titans begin to look like a team, finally coming together. Thanks to two Rob Bironas field goals combined with a Vince Young 26 yard touchdown pass, combined with a 2-yard touchdown by Travis Henry, who had a career high 178 yards, combined with a blocked punt for a safety and, last but not least, an interception of QB Mark Brunell the Titans recorded their first win of the season with a 25-22 victory over Washington.

The Titans, led by Vince Young, went on to win seven of their final eight games giving them a final record of 8-8., a record no Titans fan would have ever thought possible given the start of the season.

The Titans are sitting pretty in 2007 with over 41 million dollars to spend on free agency and high draft picks. This team very well could be a playoff contender in 2007, none to soon for the fans in Music City.
