More and more obesity experts are now proposing a multimodal approach to weight control in the same way that many diseases such as HIV, hypertension, heart disease and cancer are treated with a cocktail of medicines. A major impediment to controlling obesity is the simple fact that there are so many causes, and a multipronged strategy that addresses each cause is more effective in weight loss and control. This multi modal program must address and circumvent every known factor involved in excess age related fat storage to have maximum effect.

There are three physiological changes contributing to age related fat gain.

1. One reason why older people gain weight is that they do not burn fat as efficiently as when they were younger. As we age, our cells spend less energy and as a result fat is not burned efficiently and is thus stored as excess fat, especially as abdominal fat. Green tea extracts are known to have polyphenol compounds that raise cellular metabolic expenditure
Clinical trials of obese people have shown rapid and substantial weight loss after taking green tea extracts. In one study which compared caloric reduction with green tea supplementation, it was found that after 90 days, the diet restricted group lost 9.9 lbs. whereas the green tea supplement group lost 30.1 lbs. In addition the latter group had a decrease in body mass index (bmi) of 12% compared with 5% reduction in the former, and a waist circumference reduction of 10% vs. 5% in the diet control group. Green tea has also been shown to inhibit enzymes that digest fats reducing their absorption and accumulation in fat cells. An important element in successful weight loss is to prevent entry of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood. To recap, green tea inhibits fat absorption and digestion, reduces fat storage and increases metabolic rate and energy consumption at the cellular level.

2. Another physiological change as we get older is cellular insulin resistance resulting in the inability of glucose to enter the cells for energy production. The cells are glucose starved and the body is tricked into producing more insulin resulting in diabetes, metabolic syndrome and a host of cardiovascular complications. In addition, the glucose which accumulates in the blood is converted into triglycerides and stored in the fat cells. Extracts of seaweeds known as brown algae have been shown to cause fat loss by blocking the activity of alpha glucosidase, an enzyme important in carbohydrate absorption.

3. Older people develop leptin and adiponectin resistance. Both of these substances suppress appetite and fat deposition. Irvingia gabonensis, an african herb has been shown to control weight by virtue of increasing leptin and adiponectin sensitivity. The biochemistry and metabolic pathways involved in the digestion of absorbed nutrients is now becoming more understood. The scale is now more and more being tipped in favor of successful fat reduction and control. Several nutritional supplements such as green tea, irvingea and brown algae extract are part of a multimodal approach to a weight loss program. These substances complement each other and provide maximum fat control and additive effects in the fight against obesity.
