Since most of the people consider it to be necessary for the body's overall health, the practice of dentistry dates back to 7000 BC. Back then, many related disorders were cured using bow drills, an ancient tool consisting of a bearing block, drill, fireboard, and a simple bow. After a bit of debate, it has been shown that this form of care was in fact quite reliable.
Throughout the course of mankind, tooth extractions have been cited as treatment for a variety of illnesses, though predominately used to alleviate the pain associated with chronic tooth infection. Though, the practice did not actually become a recognized profession until after the 19th century, as most procedures were commonly performed by barbers and general physicians.
Thankfully, today's dentists have more refined methods when dealing with treatment options. The most common procedures involve oral surgery on the teeth as treatment for oral caries, or tooth decay as it is more broadly known. Dentists today are able to prescribe medication, x-rays, and devices used at home or for in office use. On top of the basic exam, many practitioners perform restorative, prosthetic, and endodontic therapy, which deals with the tooth pulp surrounding the root of the tooth itself.
People who are interested to get a degree in dentistry must first become a graduate. Though no specific degree is required, a bachelor's in the sciences, such as chemistry or biology provide relevant preparation for the necessary schooling ahead. Once a degree is obtained, the school applicants are required to complete the Dental Admission Test (DAT). These scores are used along with GPAs and letters of recommendation to make admittance decisions. If the applicant is admitted, he or she must then earn a DDS at a 4 year school which has been certified by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Once schooling is completed, prospective dentists will need to pass the National Board Dental Examination in order to receive a state license. At the end of it all, the only step left is to start a practice or join a pre-existing partnership.
In addition to becoming a dentist, many specialties exist which revolve around the general practice. Becoming a specialist requires that one trains within a residency program. Specialties range from dealing with in the Pediatric field to dealing with prosthodontics, or prosthetic teeth such as dentures and implants.
As time moves forward and technology continues to evolve, the demand for qualified dentists continues to grow. Though not the career for everyone, it is certainly a little slice of paradise for a select and chosen few.
