Careers in medicine are popular for many reasons. The are prestigious, well-paying and allow one the opportunity to help out others in his or her own community. However, because jobs in the medical field in such specialties as cardiology are demanding and highly sought out, it requires that those wishing to become a cardiologist be highly qualified and receive a great deal of training and instruction.

Before one can even dive into the difficult pre-med curriculum in college, he or she must first perform well in high school. This is really the first step in the path to a cardiology residency. A strong background in High school level science and math is essential to future success as a cardiologist.

After successfully graduating from high school, students must then complete four years of Pre-medical training at a college or university. It is imperative that a student completes all of the pre-requisites for medical school including two semesters or organic chemistry, two semesters of general chemistry, two semesters of physics and two semesters of biology. With the competitive nature of medical school, students should work to have high grade point averages and begin studying for the MCAT if planning on applying to medical school. If you’re test scores and GPA are not high enough, you might not be able to be any type of doctor. Only the best of the best scores and GPA’s are allowed to pursue a career as a cardiologist.

After completion of the Pre-requisites, students must take an entrance exam for medical school known as the MCAT or medical college admissions test. The MCAT and GPA make up the quantitative factors of the med school application. There are several other factors including interviews, personal statements and extracurricular activities that also play an important role in the admissions process.

Once a student is admitted to medical school, the grades that a student makes will closely determine the type of physician that he or she will be. The USMLE or the United States medical licensing examination has four steps, the first of which is taken after a student's second year on medical school has a large impact on what type of residency a student will receive. A residency is a required to be a fully licensed, practicing physician.

Those wishing to practice in the field of cardiology must complete a three year internal medicine residency. On top of this, he or she must also complete a two year cardiology fellowship. After all of this is completed, which usually takes twelve to thirteen years, you become a cardiologist.
