How many times have you had to turn your house upside down while trying to find your car keys? Or found a thing which has been deemed lost for quite some time in a place where you didn't expect it to be? These things may all be attributed to disarray—the single big enemy of all rooms, be they big or small. If you often find your things just lying around, you should probably use some extra space to help you organize your clutter.

When you think of storage space, you probably think about large shelves, kids’ toy chests, and that bulky closet located at the end of your hallway. No wonder only some people take the time to invest in good storage—it’s just not “chic” enough. But due to all the containers for safekeeping now available, there are so many different ways to become organized without having to spend time worrying about these clashing with your home décor. Here are seven uncommon organization ideas you may try for yourself.

1. Baskets. Even though more popular with country-style homes, woven baskets have a homey, warm feel that will go well with any theme. Use them to keep magazines, pens, jewelry, and other small items. In big, messy areas such as your living room, you may position one big basket or a couple of smaller ones on or around your table. If you’re going with the latter, buy baskets in varying sizes and weaves to add a little more interest. For saving space, place your baskets on a wall rack or an end table.

2. Dividers and shelves. Room dividers are great for breaking up huge spaces, but they have a tendency to use a lot of space—space that may be utilized for storage. If your room will be better with a divider, think about using a display rack or small bookshelf rather than a divider. This way, they’ll function both as a storage space and a dividing element. Look for an open-backed shelf so that it will look presentable on both sides, or make use of two slimmer shelves and position them back to back.

3. Linear racks. Wall storage is needed for small areas, and the trendy way to do it is by using linear storage racks. These racks consist of a vertical trunk that has several holders installed along it. It’s a great way of organizing small items in your bedroom, bathroom, or office. And because it’s mounted on the wall, it will take up no floor space and will work well on small spaces. You may even create your own—simply clean and polish an old wooden slab and nail on some L-shaped brackets on the front.

4. Niche displays. Don’t have room for displaying your antiques collection? Try putting it on top of a shelf or closet. These areas are frequently ignored and have a tendency to be dark and dusty, but if utilized the right way, they may make great corner displays. The area is just right for those special keepsakes which you’d otherwise put away in a box. Install an up-light or slide lights in order to add emphasis and draw attention to the display. Limit yourself to just three pieces per display for playing up their value and form.

5. Nested trays. So you’ve got a huge basket for all your beauty products, but you still find yourself digging for your favorite perfume each morning? Avoid this problem by keeping your storage small, or by dividing your containers into smaller spaces. Try organizing your toiletries in nested containers, with the items you use frequently in the largest tray and the less important items in the smaller compartments. This would provide you quicker access to everyday items while keeping the rest just within your reach.

6. Recessed shelves. Mounting shelves on walls saves floor space, but because the shelves bulge from the wall, they still add to that cramped atmosphere which is common in small areas. A great alternative is building your shelves inward, so the rims are on the same level as the remaining walls. This works specifically well with corner bathroom sinks. The side walls offer easy-to-reach storage for toiletries, towels, and other bathroom essentials. Make sure that you plan it well, though, because you can’t just simply uninstall these shelves like a regular shelf.

7. Old kitchen items. Used pans, bowls, cups, and other kitchen items may be recycled into trendy storage tools. Want to organize your jewelries? Get an old muffin pan and place a different piece in each muffin holder. Make use of a mug or an old cup as a pen holder, or a large bowl to store small toys and figurines. You may even take your old kitchen cabinets and rebuild them to make pull-out trays, creating a dresser drawer that saves space. Almost any old thing may be recycled, so don’t be scared to experiment.
