10 Ways to Win at Interview

1. Remember that they would like to meet you. It is vital to remember that they have asked you to meet them. They already like what they see in your CV, you must have the skills and/or experience they need so you just need to ensure that comes across.

2. Remember that you are also interviewing them. An interview is not only about you making the right impression on them; they need to make the right impression on you too. Make sure you ask the questions that you want to know the answers to if you were going to accept their position.

3. Dress to impress. First impressions are essential and this includes the way you are dressed. Clean and ironed clothes are essential and in lots of cases a suit is advisable. Professional clothes will help you feel professional and more confident and that should come across.

4. Do your research. It is key that you know as much as you can about the company you are seeing before going to interview. Look at their website, particularly their ‘about us’ section. I would also advise that you go to the employer prior to interview and ask for any literature they might have such as brochures. Think of questions you might ask them based on your research.

5. Arrive with time to spare. Ensure you know exactly where the employer is located, do a dry run if necessary. For example if the company is located in the centre of Exeter, what will the traffic be at that time of day? AA Route Planner can be a useful tool. Plan to arrive and be in right place 10 to 15 minutes before the interview. If you arrive early than this it is advisable to wait in your car or outside.

6. Great greeting. Ensure you shake the interviewers hand and give an appropriate smile. The more confident you make the greeting the better the impression you will make. Try to ask them an engaging question like ‘it seems very busy in here this morning. Is that usually?’ It will display an interest and awareness of your surroundings. Probably best not to comment on it being quiet though!

7. Eye contact is key. Make sure you look the interviewer in the eye when answering questions or listening to them. It displays you to be an interested and engaging person.

8. Think before you speak. Take a deep breath and think for a moment before you answer questions. It is more important that you answer correctly than quickly. Consider what they are really asking you and ask them to repeat the question if you are still not quite clear.

9. Try to mirror your interviewer. Try to gauge the personality of the interviewer. If he or she is slightly humorous in the way they talk then be the same (don’t go over the top though as they might think you are not taking the interview seriously). If they speak quietly ensure you are subtle though.

10. Ask for the vacancy if you want it. If the position sounds like the opportunity for you then tell them! Clearly you need to do this subtly. You may want to say something like ‘Thank you for meeting with me. The position sounds perfect and I hope you will consider me for it.’

I hope you find this useful and remember that if you don’t get the role then don’t worry, there are plenty more jobs in the sea!
